Cinnamom is taxonomically extremely difficult. There are numerous species used as spice, functional food, or ailment in traditional medicinal systems all over Asia (Ayurveda, TCM, traditional medicinal systems of Korea, Japan, Vietnam). Some species accumulate coumarin, which is of toxicological concern. Also in the West, cinnamom capsules, are currently booming as food supplement against type-II diabetes. We have, therefore, established a collection of cinnamoms and spent quite some time and effort to authenticate them. Many turned out to be something else from that what was declared. The table below gives our current state of knowledge. This is a snapshot, not more, but also not less. We did the analysis by morphology, anatomy and molecular markers to the best of our knowledge and according to the state of the art.
