Algal Biotechnology with Spirulina

Folic Acid (FA), a vital B vitamin, plays a crucial role in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and is essential for preventing various disorders in humans. Folate deficiency is linked to increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, dementia, and certain cancers. Cyanobacteria produce valuable organic compounds with antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer properties. Spirulina, a commercially significant cyanobacterium, is rich in proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, essential amino acids, PUFAs, and vitamins, including B9 (folic acid), critical for fetal and maternal tissue growth. This project aims to isolate Spirulina sp. from Kohat streams, Pakistan, with high folic acid production potential to combat folate deficiency through supplementation and food fortification, enhancing economic viability.
